Money grips our lives. We chase it, spend it, save it, and fear its loss. Jesus knew this. He spoke more about money than faith, prayer, or heaven. Nearly half of His parables address financial stewardship. We must act: shift our focus from earthly gain to heavenly treasure. “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (Matthew 6:21)
Jesus’ parable of the Rich Fool reveals four critical errors:
- This man ignored God’s provision
- He assumed ownership of his wealth
- He thought he had endless time
- and he hoarded his abundance
As Christians, we must learn from his mistakes.
- Acknowledge God’s gifts
- Surrender control
- Live with eternity in mind
- Share generously
Remember this great admonition from the Bible, “You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?” (Luke 12:20)

What does it mean to be “rich toward God”?
It begins with humility. God grants us the ability to create wealth. Credit Him. Avoid pride. Trust in Him, not fleeting riches. “But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth.” (Deuteronomy 8:18)
Cultivate contentment. Reject the endless pursuit of “more.” Discern between need and greed. Find satisfaction in God’s provision. We cannot take earthly wealth to heaven. Learn to be content with basic needs. “But godliness with contentment is great gain.” (1 Timothy 6:6)
Practice radical generosity. Use wealth to advance God’s kingdom. Share freely. Be rich in good deeds. Invest in others. Remember, God loves a cheerful giver. “Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share.” (1 Timothy 6:18)
Forward your treasure. Don’t just store up wealth on earth. Invest in eternity. Seek heavenly rewards. Prepare for your final day. Give what you cannot keep to gain what you cannot lose. “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven.” (Matthew 6:19-20)
Shift your focus
It’s about moving from chasing earthly riches to investing in eternal rewards. Living a life ‘rich toward God’ isn’t just a passive idea; it’s an active, daily choice. We’re talking about intentionality. As Hebrews 12:28 reminds us, ‘Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe.’
So let’s be honest, we can’t wait for a crisis to reassess our priorities. We need to do that now. Take a moment to examine your heart. Are your finances aligned with God’s will? Every decision counts. Remember, true wealth? It’s found in Him. Matthew 16:26 asks, ‘For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul?’ It’s a powerful question.
Think of yourself as a steward
You’re managing resources entrusted to you for God’s glory. Use your wealth to bless others, to build His kingdom. Let your life be a testament to His goodness. 1 Peter 4:10 says, ‘Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.’ It’s a real responsibility, but also a privilege.
This is a call to action, a challenge to live differently. It’s about rejecting the world’s values and embracing God’s wisdom. Let’s be rich in faith, love, and good deeds. Your life matters, and your choices matter. Invest in eternity.
Move beyond just talking about this
Let’s take practical steps. Seek God’s guidance in every financial decision. Let’s live a life that honors Him. Let’s be a beacon of light in a world consumed by greed. This isn’t just about money, it’s about the state of our hearts, our legacy, our relationship with God. It’s about making a conscious choice to be ‘rich toward God.’
Let our lives reflect His values. Let’s live with purpose, with passion, for eternity.
Remember, God provides, He guides, and He blesses. Trust in His provision. Seek His wisdom. Embrace His calling. Be a faithful steward. Your journey begins now. Take that first step.
