The Trump US Economy: A Christian Perspective

In just a few days, Donald Trump will again be President of the United States. His proposed economic policies are poised to significantly influence both the U.S. and global economies. Even before he sets foot in the Oval Office, the proposed Trump US Economy is already impacting financial markets and the global political scene. Key initiatives include implementing tariffs, enacting tax reforms, and altering regulatory frameworks. From a Christian perspective, these policies can be evaluated through the lenses of stewardship, justice, and care for the marginalized.

Tariff Implementation and Trade Policies

President Trump has indicated plans to impose a 25% tariff on imports from Mexico and Canada, contingent upon their cooperation in addressing illegal immigration and drug trafficking. Additional tariffs targeting Chinese imports are also anticipated.

Economic Impact: Tariffs are the weapon of choice! Drive up import costs, steer consumers towards domestic products. But this economic combat comes at a price. U.S. businesses face skyrocketing production costs, consumers pay the price at the register, and international trade relationships crumble. Automotive and electronics industries are in the crosshairs, with jobs and profits on the line.

Christian Perspective: Proverbs 11:1 holds us accountable: ‘The Lord detests dishonest scales, but accurate weights find favor with him.’ This means trade policies must be a force for equitable treatment. We must aggressively pursue domestic job protection. However, not at the expense of global economic justice and the well-being of our international partners. We are partners, not predators.

Tax Reforms

The administration plans to extend the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act provisions set to expire in 2025. It will introduce further tax reductions, including cuts for corporations and exemptions on tips and Social Security payments.

Economic Impact: Slash taxes, and proponents claim you’ll supercharge the Trump US Economy: more money for consumers, less burden for businesses, leading to jobs and investment. But critics fire back: this move will explode the deficit, adding over $5 trillion to the national debt within ten years. It’s an economic gamble with massive potential consequences.

Christian Perspective: Biblical teachings champion justice for the poor, as Proverbs 22:22 makes clear: ‘Do not exploit the poor because they are poor and do not crush the needy in court.’ Tax policies must be designed to deliver this justice, prioritizing the well-being of the marginalized and preventing the wealthy from hoarding economic gains. The Church bears the primary responsibility for eradicating poverty, while the government must act to create policies that empower human flourishing.

Regulatory Changes

President Trump intends to reverse previous energy restrictions, including lifting export bans on liquefied natural gas and reopening the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge for drilling.  His goal is to help America to become energy self-sufficient again.

Economic Impact: Unleash the energy sector through deregulation! This aggressive move will ignite domestic production, create a surge of new jobs, and slash energy prices. Expect a powerful economic jolt.

Christian Perspective: Genesis 2:15 holds us accountable: ‘The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.’ Policies must forge a powerful alliance between economic development and environmental responsibility. We cannot leave a legacy of destruction. We must act now to protect creation and ensure a thriving future.

Immigration Policies

The administration’s proposed immigration policies include declaring illegal immigration a national emergency, increasing border security, and enhancing deportation efforts.

Economic Impact: Crack down on immigration, and expect immediate labor shortages to cripple agriculture, construction, and hospitality. Production costs will skyrocket. However, this aggressive move is touted as a way to unlock better jobs and higher pay for domestic workers. The question is, will the benefits outweigh the immediate damage?

Christian Perspective: Scripture doesn’t merely suggest compassion towards foreigners—it commands it. Leviticus 19:34 declares: ‘The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself.’ Immigration policies must embody this moral imperative, upholding justice and recognizing the intrinsic value and contributions of all individuals, regardless of their origin. This does not negate the government’s duty to safeguard its citizens from potential criminals who may have entered the country, nor does it force American taxpayers to bear the financial burden of those who entered illegally.

The Trump US Economy policies in 2025 are set to bring significant changes with complex implications. From a Christian perspective, it is essential to assess these policies through the principles of justice, stewardship, and compassion.

Engaging in informed and prayerful consideration can guide individuals and communities in responding to these developments in ways that align with their faith and promote the common good.
