The Spiritual Impact Of Money

Reading Time: 5 minutes

This video blog post was made during the pandemic season. I know it has brought financial hardship for many. It’s a stressful time, but I’ve learned that it is also a chance to reflect on our relationship with money. In my YouTube video “Spiritual Issues That Impact Our Money,” I have explored five key spiritual challenges we faced during the pandemic, which has certainly changed how we view and handle money today.

The Impact of Money in Trusting God

Did we truly rely on God with our money? Or did we depend more on our work-from-home jobs and income? Many people found their sense of security in their paycheck or their bank account balance. But the Bible teaches us to place our trust in God, who is our ultimate provider. Proverbs 3:5-6 encourages us: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”

Remember, when we trust God with our finances, we acknowledge that He is in control and that He will provide for our needs. This frees us from anxiety and worry, allowing us to focus on living a life of purpose and generosity.

Fear of Lack: Confronting Scarcity Mindset

Fear of lack can cripple our generosity. Did we tightly held to our resources, worried further that giving in the midst of the pandemic will lead to scarcity. Remember that God calls us to a different mindset. Matthew 6:33 says, “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” This verse reminds us that when we prioritize God’s kingdom and trust in His provision, He will take care of our needs. Giving becomes an act of faith, demonstrating our belief that God will supply all we need.

Purposeful Spending: Aligning Finances with Faith

We need to have a purpose beyond personal gain. Are we using our finances to honor God and further His kingdom? Or are we consumed with acquiring material possessions? 1 Timothy 6:17-19 provides clear guidance: “Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way, they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.”

This passage challenges us to see our money differently. We should view our finances as a tool to advance God’s kingdom. This means investing in things that have eternal significance, not just temporary possessions. The passage reminds us that true wealth is not measured in dollars and cents. Instead, it is found in our relationship with God and our commitment to serving others.

Contentment: Finding Satisfaction in God’s Provision

Are we constantly seeking more, never satisfied with what we have? Do we compare ourselves to others, leading to envy and discontentment? This pursuit of “more” can leave us feeling empty and unfulfilled. Hebrews 13:5 offers a powerful antidote: “Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, ‘Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.'”

This verse reminds us that true contentment is found in God’s presence and His promises. When we focus on His faithfulness and provision, we can experience gratitude and peace, even in the midst of challenging circumstances. Cultivating contentment frees us from the constant need for more, allowing us to appreciate the blessings we already have.

Identity: Rooted in Christ, Not Possessions

Where do we find our sense of worth? Is it tied to our possessions, our accomplishments, or our social status? These things can be fleeting and unreliable. Our true identity is found in Christ alone. Galatians 2:20 proclaims, “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”

This verse reminds us that our value comes from being God’s beloved children, redeemed and transformed by His grace. When our identity is rooted in Christ, we are freed from the pressure to find worth in external things. We can live with confidence and purpose, knowing that our value is secure in Him.

Recognizing the Signs

These spiritual issues can manifest in various ways. A person who trusts God with their finances may demonstrate that trust through generous giving. Someone struggling with a fear of lack might hoard money, afraid to let go of resources. If someone lacks a clear purpose for their money, they might make impulsive purchases or buy things they don’t need. Discontentment can lead to a constant striving for more, never feeling satisfied with what they have. And someone who equates their worth with their possessions might use money to try to elevate their status or impress others.

Finding Freedom from Financial Strongholds

The good news is that we can overcome these spiritual challenges. We can break free from unhealthy patterns and develop a healthier relationship with money. The first step is acknowledging these issues exist within us. We need to be honest about our attitudes and behaviors towards money. This requires self-reflection and a willingness to identify any financial strongholds in our lives. Once we are aware of these issues, we can begin to address them. Through prayer, repentance, and seeking God’s guidance, we can find freedom and healing.

Practical Steps Toward Financial Freedom

Here are some practical steps to help you overcome these spiritual challenges:

  • Trust in God’s provision. Remember that God is the source of all good things. He will provide for your needs if you trust in Him.
  • Practice generosity. Give to others, even when it’s difficult. This helps develop a spirit of giving and gratitude.
  • Seek purpose in your life. Use your money to glorify God and further His kingdom.
  • Be content with what you have. Don’t compare yourself to others. Focus on your blessings and be grateful.
  • Find your identity in Christ. Remember that your worth is not based on your possessions or achievements. It’s based on being a child of God.

By overcoming these spiritual issues, you can develop a healthy relationship with money. This allows you to live a life of abundance and purpose. You can use your resources to bless others, further God’s kingdom, and live a life that glorifies Him.

More Wise Financial Practices

Beyond addressing the spiritual challenges, consider these practical points:

  • Be mindful of debt. Debt can cause stress and hinder generosity. Create a plan to pay it off as soon as possible.

  • Develop healthy spending habits. Avoid unnecessary spending. Focus on saving and investing for the future. This builds a solid financial foundation for generous living.

  • Find a system that works for you. There’s no single right way to manage money. Find what works for you and allows you to be financially responsible and spiritually fulfilled.

A Final Word on Spiritual and Financial Well-being

The pandemic has underscored the importance of a healthy relationship with money. When we address the spiritual issues that affect our finances, we can experience true abundance and purpose. This enables us to use our resources to bless others, advance God’s kingdom, and live a life that honors Him.
