Identity theft and your finances

Years ago, crafty pickpockets will take the cash you have while you are walking in the streets. Today, while still walking the same streets, online identity theft can cause havoc on your financial profile, and potentially bankrupt you. Identity theft and your finances have become a connection of high concern today. So here are a few things that can help strengthen your position against this new breed of thieves:

  • MONITOR – Sign up to credit report agencies so you can receive alerts if there is a substantial change in your credit scores.
  • STRATEGIZE – Don’t use the same password for all the websites you use. Get a password manager like LastPass or 1Password to help you manage your passwords.
  • PROTECT – Use an anti-virus or anti-malware service. Check out ESET, for instance.
  • REVIEW – your bank statements regularly, know how to reach and alert your bank when needed
  • DESTROY – any physical financial papers/reports you receive when you throw them out.
  • and SHARE – this page with your family and friends.

If you’re married, then it is even more important to commit to the steps above. And, to know more about how you and your spouse can protect your finances further, consider downloading this free eBook.
