What is the truth about cursed finances? If one works to multiply resources AND ends up at a loss, was it cursed? Was it “bad luck”?
“But remember the LORD your God, for it is He who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms His covenant, which He swore to your ancestors, as it is today.” – Deuteronomy 8:18, ESV
This is a solid verse that assures us that as our abilities (skills, education, expertise, experience) come from God, applying these abilities to the work should PRODUCE a positive result and multiply wealth. What God enables, bears fruit. God is a promise keeper.
Generations past, the present and in the far future can trust that this covenant is firm. His words will always be reliable.
The key that unlocks the blessing
We usually skip the first part of this verse… “But remember the Lord your God”. Remembering is powerful and sets the stage for the awesome promise we are quick to claim. How can it be cursed finances when God is involved?
Curses thrive when we ignore God’s role. When we forget the Giver, we lose His way to the blessing. When we become self-absorbed and set Him aside, we lose more, we produce nothing, and we become empty.
Let’s take a moment to pray:
Dear Lord, we are sorry for neglecting to acknowledge Your presence in our workplace. We do forget that You are the source of all the skills, talents, and abilities we use to produce wealth. Apart from You, Lord, we are truly nothing. Please help us become aware of Your presence in our workplace every day. Amen.
When God is near
Understand His business plans, receive His instructions and follow through consistently. Remember, our stewardship role is to execute the business owner’s plan. And our time in prayer ultimately grows the business His way. He knows how to run the business, so the less we pray, the more we lose. When He drives the business, the massive benefits we all will receive from Him are inevitable. He is a timely and generous giver. Whatever the need, He is ready to supply.
He rescues you from trouble. – Psalms 34:17-18 “When the righteous cry for help, the LORD hears and delivers them out of all their troubles. The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.”
He gives you peace – 2 Thessalonians 3:16 “Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times and in every way. The Lord be with all of you.”
He will remain with you – John 14:18 “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.”
Cursed finances, no more when we draw close to Him
Consider the following responses as you meditate on God’s words and seek His wisdom concerning the business.
Proverbs 3:5-6 “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”
Yield your ideas and plans to Him – let Him take over. He knows you’ve thought your plans out and they may all be good. But while He likes to hear what’s on your mind, He loves to lead you to the way of the best possible business outcome. His ultimate goal has eternal benefits and He will use the business in this priority order:
-
- Glorify His name
- Lead souls to heaven
- Bless those in need
Luke 6:38 “give, and it will be given to you. Good measure pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.”
Imitate His generosity, give. Begin sowing, praying & giving when God and where God tells you to. You will soon find more to give as God begins to pour His resources and use you as a conduit of His blessings for other people.
Matthew 5:16 “In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”
Be His light. The world is a dark, dark place. One act of kindness illuminates the heart, and fills it with gratitude towards God.
