Much like the concept of obedience in the Bible, where actions reflect faith, consider this: As a child, did your parents give you an allowance? Did you use it to buy candy instead of lunch? Maybe a toy seemed more appealing than a meal. A colorful array of sweets won over your hunger. But the heart of the matter remains. You misused the money given to you. Your father had a specific purpose in mind. As adults, our money challenges persist. How do we obey God with our finances? How do we glorify the Giver of all blessings? We must act, not just think. We need to shift how we interact with money.
Own God’s Perspective on Finances.
Recognize that everything belongs to God. Your possessions are His. Your ability to give comes from Him. “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it” (Psalm 24:1). Start giving in obedience, not from a sense of sacrifice. Lean on God for security and provision. Trust His will for where your wealth goes. Embrace the concept of stewardship.
Remember, God entrusted His resources to you. Be responsible with budgeting, saving, and spending. Track your monthly expenses. Use a budgeting app or spreadsheet. See where your money goes. Assess your spending priorities. Make necessary adjustments. Inquire about savings plans at your bank. Save for the future. Set aside your tithe immediately. Do this upon receiving your salary. It shows discipline. Managing money isn’t just for accountants. It requires the right mindset. Remember, we are accountable to God.

Align Your Heart with God’s Heart
Change how you feel about money. Understand God’s character. He sees your heart. You cannot hide anything from Him. “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:21). God values your heart over outward actions. He desires obedience over mere sacrifice. He was pleased with the widow’s offering. She gave her last two coins. One of the greatest examples of obedience found in the Bible.
The widow is very unlike the rich man who gave from excess. When your heart aligns with God’s, you treasure what He treasures. Become sensitive to the needs of others. Carry the burdens of the church and community. Do you know a missionary from your church? Your awareness reflects your heart. Support them through prayers and giving. Invest in God’s kingdom. Ask your pastor for missionary contacts. Request ministry newsletters. Understand their situations.
Does giving excite you? “Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver” (2 Corinthians 9:7). God loves a cheerful giver. Be alert to the needs around you. If God prompts you to give, obey. Pray about it. Trust His direction. True giving involves sacrifice.
Disobeying God Has Consequences
What happens when we disobey God with money? Imagine your child misusing their allowance. You would stop giving them money. You would pack their lunch. God’s redirection is an act of love. “For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and he chastens all those he accepts as sons” (Hebrews 12:6). If you are a poor steward, God will give resources to someone else. Disobeying God dishonors Him. It negatively impacts others. You rob yourself of the joy of giving.
Obeying God with money is an adventure. You can see a lot of solid examples of obedience in the Bible! In each one, an example of how you will not leave empty-handed. Learn from the Giver. Listen to Him. Trust in Him. Witness Him move in your life. Take action today. Start being a faithful steward. Begin to truly give.
