2,000 Bible verses about money should tell you how important this topic is to God. Why would God talk so much about money in his word? Surely other issues are far more important. Because how we handle money is a reflection of our hearts, values, and faith. In fact, many Bible passages warn us about what money can do to us.  Money can seduce us, enslave us and it can become an idol that we serve.

The Bible provides timeless wisdom about earning, giving, saving, and managing money, guiding us toward a life of purpose and contentment. Here are ten powerful verses about money and what they teach us.

The top 3 Bible verses about money

1. Matthew 6:24 – “You cannot serve both God and money.”

Jesus warns us in this verse that money has the power to compete with God for our devotion. While money itself is not evil, the love of money can lead us astray. This verse reminds us to prioritize our relationship with God and avoid making wealth an idol.  Notice it is the love of money that is the issue.  We are to love God, not money.

Lesson: Use money as a tool, not a master. Seek first God’s kingdom, and let financial decisions align with His will.

2. Proverbs 3:9-10 – “Honor the Lord with your wealth.”

This verse encourages us to honor God by giving back a portion of what He has blessed us with. By practicing generosity, we acknowledge God as the ultimate provider and demonstrate trust in His provision.  Furthermore, when we give back, we are acknowledging that what we legally own, is in fact really God’s.  Psalm 24:1 says ‘the earth is the Lord’s’.  Christians have the privilege of being God’s caretakers.

We can honor the Lord in multiple ways with our wealth.  How we get wealth, how we use it and where we give it are all part of the process.  It is not just about giving, it is about our total attitude.

Lesson: Your giving is an act of worship that honors God and help others.

3. 1 Timothy 6:10 – “For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil.”

Notice this verse does not say money itself is evil but rather the love of money. An unhealthy obsession with wealth can lead to greed, selfishness, and harm.  When we fall in love with money we become discontent, envious of others and feel a sense of dread that we don’t have enough.

Paul in his letter to the Philippians, that he learned to be content in whatever circumstance.  We need to learn to be content.  You will always find someone who has more than you.  Discontentment, driven by a love of money is going to have a negative impact on your life and mental well-being.  At its extreme, it can lead to criminal acts, such as fraud, tax evasion and other sinful behaviour that Christians should avoid.

Lesson: Keep a healthy perspective on money. Let contentment and gratitude guard your heart against greed.

4. Luke 16:10 – “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much.”

This verse speaks to the importance of faithfulness in managing resources. Whether God has entrusted us with little or much, we are called to be diligent stewards.

God is not against success, in fact it is good to pray for success and fruitfulness in our endeavours.  However, God is for more concerned with our character and the behaviour that comes from that.  God wants us to learn to be faithful, whether we have a little or a lot.

I’ve often believed that God intentionally withholds finances from some people because he knows that money would damage them.  We need to learn to be wise with whatever we have in our hands.

If you want God to bless you with a lot of money, first prove that you’d be a trustworthy servant.

Lesson: Handle finances wisely, even on a small scale, to demonstrate trustworthiness and responsibility.

5. Proverbs 22:7 – “The borrower is slave to the lender.”

In the western world today, households are drowning in record levels of debt.  The Bible never paints debt as sinful, however it is a wisdom issue.  Debt can be sinful, if our motives for using it are wrong.

This verse highlights the dangers of debt, which can lead to financial stress and limit our freedom. The Bible encourages us to avoid unnecessary debt and live within our means.

Many Christians believe debt can be used to gain wealth.  Whilst there is no doubt that leveraging a good investment can lead to bigger gains, the reverse is true as well.  An investment that doesn’t go as expected can lead to far greater losses.

Naturally, some businesses use debt to purchase income-producing assets such as equipment.  This is normal business practice, but it still requires the wisdom to ensure that the amount borrowed is done sensibly and is easy to repay.

Lesson: Be cautious about borrowing and strive to live debt-free, allowing financial freedom to serve God and others.

6. Matthew 6:33 – “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”

This verse comes after Jesus discusses how people worry about material needs like food, drink, and clothing. The core meaning has several key aspects:

The verse essentially teaches that rather than being anxious about basic needs, one should focus primarily on spiritual growth and living according to God’s will, trusting that God will provide what is needed. It’s a call to reorder one’s priorities and trust in divine provision.

Lesson:

The word “first” emphasizes making God’s kingdom and righteousness the primary focus of one’s life, above material concerns.  “Righteousness” – This points to living according to God’s standards and pursuing a right relationship with Him and lastly there is a promise – The verse includes an assurance that when one prioritizes God in their life, material needs (“all these things”) will be provided for.

7. Ecclesiastes 5:10 – “Whoever loves money never has enough.”

Solomon, one of the wealthiest men in history, warns about the futility of chasing wealth. No amount of money can satisfy the deepest longings of the human heart.

The problem with our sinful nature, is that there is never enough.  The desire for a new car, bigger house, better holiday, luxury travel are never ending.  Often there is nothing inherently wrong with the things that we want, it is more the insatiable desire for more that is the issue.  It is problematic, not only because money and possessions can never satisfy, but because it can distract us from giving to eternal causes.  We are far less likely to give to kingdom activities if we feel that we don’t have enough.

Lesson: True contentment comes from God, not wealth. Learn to be grateful for what you have.

8. Proverbs 13:22 – “A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children.”

This verse highlights the importance of planning and providing for future generations. Wise financial stewardship includes preparing for the needs of your family and leaving a legacy of faith and provision.

Leaving money to your family members is a good thing, but it is very distant from leaving them legacy of a knowledge and faith in Jesus Christ.

Lesson: Plan for the future, but don’t just focus on material wealth—leave a spiritual legacy as well.

9. Philippians 4:19 – “And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.”

This verse is a promise of God’s provision. While it doesn’t guarantee wealth, it assures us that God will provide what we truly need.

Lesson: Trust in God’s faithfulness to supply your needs, even in financial uncertainty.

10. Hebrews 13:5 – “Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have.”

This verse calls us to avoid greed and embrace contentment. It reminds us that God’s presence and promises are far more valuable than any material possession.

Like Jesus warning, it is the ‘love of money’ is what can get us into trouble.  Money is a tool and it can do great good. However, when we fall in love with money we risk becoming discontent and making it an idol in our lives.  God’s word is crystal clear, there can only be room for one God in our life.

Lesson: Contentment is a choice that grows from trust in God’s sufficiency and goodness.

Prioritize God in Your Finances:

Generosity, and trust in God’s provision should be at the heart of your financial decisions.
Avoid Debt and Live Within Your Means:Make wise choices about borrowing and spending to maintain financial freedom.  Indeed, if you want to get ahead, you need to live beneath your means.
Cultivate Contentment:Focus on what you have, not what you lack, and remember that true satisfaction comes from God.
Plan and Steward Wisely:Save and invest thoughtfully, but remember that all wealth ultimately belongs to God.

Final Thoughts

Money is a significant part of life, but it’s not the ultimate goal. The Bible reminds us to keep our priorities in check, trust God, and use money as a tool to bless others and further His kingdom.
