Can Your Finances Be Cursed?

Some people believe it while some people don’t, but what is the truth of one’s finances being thought of as cursed?

All through our lives, we learn about our strengths. Upon realizing what they are, it is best to hone them and be good stewards of the skills and abilities that God has given. Truly, there is a purpose as to why we possess them. These skills are useful and good. It will serve us if we use them wisely.

In the book of Deuteronomy 8:18, it speaks of God enabling us to create wealth through our abilities: “But remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your ancestors, as it is today.” God is after our character. In the first few lines of the verse, it says, “but remember the Lord your God.” God is the giver of such abilities as clearly expressed in the scripture. What does this tell us? It means that we are to always acknowledge God as the provider of everything that we have and can have; that we are to be grateful all the time.

I believe that curses are a product of us forgetting God. We forget about the Giver. We eventually think of having done things on our own. We become self-absorbed. Such belief can lead to the “love” of money (of finances).

Therefore, believing that we deserve it and that it is rightfully ours is very dangerous because it can lead to doing things that will only please ourselves.

Now, there are two phases here. We either originate a curse over our finances because we forget the Blesser, hence indulging into sin. The other phase is the pre-existing curse, we call them “generational curse.” This is a kind of curse that has been in the family line for years. It is extremely vital to know and understand its origin. Ask these questions to find out:

  • What kind of transactions did the family (or your ancestors) make?
  • What was the money used for?
  • How was the money handled?
  • Are these ungodly agreements?
  • Is there greed, a hunger for more?
  • Did this lead to the love and worship of money?

There are just a few of the many possible reasons that could result in such curse.

A generational curse affects the financial standing of current and future generations. Now, as a Christian, ask God to help you unravel sins from years back. Ask God what they are and how they came to be such a torment. You must resolve this by uprooting the sins and renounce ungodly understanding about money. Pray. Ask God to remove this curse in your family, and in your financial transactions. Recommit your finances to God; He is the source of everything you have.

Remember that God wants to bless His children. God desires to bless you because He is a good Father. As He blesses you, these blessings must overflow and benefit other people because you are an instrument of God’s blessing to lead others to Jesus.

Money is not evil. We need money. Money is a blessing. However, it is the love of money that makes it wrong. It is how and where we use it that makes a big difference. It is a factor that will either bless us or curse us, all the days of our lives!

Remember, money serves us as we serve God.
