“Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he.”
Proverbs 29:18

If there’s one thing many businessmen are missing out, it’s vision. If there’s one reason why many busi-nesses are closing and unsuccessful, it’s the lack of vision. If you are a businessperson and you want to last long in the industry, here are two important reasons why you need to have a vision.

Vision gives us direction

Not having a vision is like riding a bus and not knowing where to get off, aimlessly spending precious hours just sitting inside. It’s also like shooting an arrow without a target. Without a vision, we’re like chaff or a seed that lets the wind take us wherever it blows.

Even today, we may be thinking that we are already doing so many things that are necessary to grow our business and still find ourselves asking why the business is not progressing. The truth is, it’s a mis-conception to think that the more work we do, the more effort we exert, the more successful the busi-ness will get. It’s possible to work very hard, get stressed and pressured, and yet miss the whole point of why you are in business. We must have a vision to keep us on track.

It’s not how long we work, nor how hard we persevere, that measures the success of our business. It’s how much of what we‘re doing is aligned with our vision. It’s how much of your efforts are helping you get closer to your dream– to that image that you’re envisioning to reach after a certain period of time. In the end, what really matters are the steps, whether big or small, that will lead us to our destination.

For example, if we are going to HongKong Disneyland, we need to board a plane bound for HongKong. We are not going to board a plane that is headed to the Middle East. Getting on a plane is not enough for you to reach your destination. You need to GET ON THE RIGHT PLANE.

Vision keeps us motivated

A business needs to have a vision. Whether it is a food business, clothing, health and wellness, manufac-turing or any other type of industry, it needs to have a clear sight of where it wants to go. Otherwise, it is just a waste of time, money, and effort. Vision gives us direction, a specific target that you want to reach, a picture of the future that you want to be in.

Proverbs 29:18 describes what happens to us when we don’t have a vision. “Where there is no vision, the people perish…” We will easily get discouraged and lose morale when we don’t have a picture that would remind us of why we started the business. When problems in the business arise, we get exhaust-ed and stressed out and if we don’t have a vision, our hopes die out and we quit. Our vision will be the glue that holds our hopes and dreams together. Our vision will always weigh more than the challenges that try to pull us down. Therefore, we will not quit if we look forward to what we want to achieve through our business.

In the New Testament, we find Jesus doing numerous activities: traveling from town to town on foot, healing the sick, raising the dead, turning water into wine, casting out demons, multiplying bread and fish, calming a storm. Yet in all these things, Jesus never lost sight of his vision– that is to make sure that in everything that He does, the Gospel is preached and the Father’s will is done. This is why Jesus never quit. His hopes did not perish because He knew where He was going.

Jesus had a vision and it led Him to His destination. It’s time we businessmen have ours too.
